A Pump and Dump Scam is a form of illegal securities fraud where fraudsters artificially inflate (“pump“) the price of a stock or asset through false, misleading, or exaggerated statements, and then quickly sell (“dump“) their own holdings at the inflated price for a massive profit. This leaves the vast majority of unsuspecting investors with shares that suddenly plummet in value.
How the Scheme Unfolds?
The scheme typically targets low-volume or microcap stocks (often called “penny stocks”) and, more recently, cryptocurrency projects, because they are easier to manipulate since only a small amount of buying activity can cause a sharp price rise.
- The Accumulation (Pre-Pump): The scammers quietly buy up a large number of shares of a low-priced, often obscure stock.
- The Pump: The scammers launch an aggressive, organized promotional campaign to generate massive hype. They do this by:
- Spreading false “inside” information (e.g., a “groundbreaking new contract” or “imminent regulatory approval“).
- Using social media (Telegram, Discord, X/Twitter), email spam, or online forums to create a sense of urgency and FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

- The Peak and The Dump: As investors buy into the hype, demand for the stock surges, artificially driving the price to a high peak. Once the fraudsters sufficiently inflate the price, they instantly sell or ‘dump’ all their shares at the peak price, securing huge profits.
- The Crash: With the fraudsters’ selling pressure and the end of the fake promotion, the demand dries up, and the stock price collapses back to its low, true value (or lower). Late-stage investors are left holding worthless or significantly devalued shares.
Red Flags of Pump and Dump Scam
- Unsolicited Tips: The investment advice comes from a stranger via social media, text message, email, or a “wrong number” voicemail.
- Microcap/Penny Stocks: Fraudsters hype a very small, unknown company, which often trades over-the-counter (OTC) with little public information available.

- High-Pressure/Urgency: You are pressured to “act now” or told it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that you must keep secret.
- Guaranteed Gains: Promises of rapid, huge, and guaranteed returns (e.g., “Rs.10,000 will return Rs.25,000 in 30 days“).
