Honey trapping is a form of deception and manipulation where a romantic or sexual relationship is used as bait. The objective is to extract information, money, or favors from a target, or to compromise and blackmail them. The term “honey trap” essentially means a strategy where an attractive person (the “honey“) is used to lure someone into a vulnerable or compromising situation (the “trap“).
Contexts of Honey Trapping
Espionage and National Security
This is the most historically common use.
- Goal: To obtain classified or sensitive information from a foreign official, military personnel, or corporate executive.
- Method: An intelligence agent (often called a “swallow” or “raven” in historical terms) establishes a deep relationship with the target. With this the agent gains access to their secrets or lures them into a compromising sexual encounter that is secretly filmed or photographed.
- Result: The target is then blackmailed into becoming an informant to prevent the embarrassing or career-ending material from being exposed.

Criminal Extortion and Blackmail
This is a more common use in criminal circles and online scams.
- Goal: To extort money from a victim.
- Method: Scammer establishes a romantic relationship online and then tricks the victim into sharing sensitive photos, videos, or financial details.
- Result: Scammer threatens to share the compromising material with the victim’s family, employer or the public unless a ransom payment is made.
Private Investigations (Fidelity Testing)
In this context, it is used for evidence gathering.
- Goal: To test the fidelity of a spouse or partner.
- Method: A private investigator is hired to approach the target (the spouse) and attempt to entice them into a flirtatious or sexual encounter.
- Result: The investigator records the interaction (usually just the communication/flirting) to provide evidence to the client about whether the target was willing to cheat.

Key Difference from Romance Scams
While they share similarities, honey trapping usually has a more sinister or specific objective than a typical Romance Scam.
- The primary goal of Honey Trap is Extortion, Blackmail, or Espionage whereas Romance Scam focuses on Direct Financial Fraud.
- In a Honey Trap, the trap is to lure the victim into a compromising situation (sexual encounter, revealing secrets) while in Romance Scam the victim is lured into a false emotional attachment to facilitate a money request.
- The main motive of honey trap is power, control, or state secrets but for romance scam its simple theft or fraud.
In short, a romance scam is purely about the money you send them. A honey trap is about the money, secrets, or control they can gain by compromising you. Learn more about “Honey Trapping” with the help of below video.
